text Veteran Chicano activist's home raided by agencies Ernesto Arce 2012-05-16 11:25 AM
A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles. (text/plain)

text What We Want Them to Say, What They Want Them to Do Sudhama Ranganathan 2012-05-16 4:40 AM
Money is a strong pull, there can be no denying that. There are few people that can resist its lure. I don't refer to money to purchase the basic necessities; there is almost no other way to get those in the world we live. I mean beyond that – after people have the necessities taken care of. The draw of a little more comfort, convenience or even luxury that only money can provide causes people to move towards the cash before they even know they've taken the steps. It's part of being human. (text/html)

Brazil: great President, Congress bad.
While Dilma Roussef hits each day more, "pulling" the leveling of interest of the Brazilian public debt to international levels and begins to devise an industrial policy firmly grounded in a serious exchange rate policy and in science and technology, in addition to important tax cuts, Congress is the scene of successive corruption scandals, all them originated in the corporate (image/jpeg)

text The Loss of Respect of the Economic Elite is Enormous Peter Ulrich 2012-05-15 6:42 AM
The embedding of the market and the economy in the civil society is the challenge of the 21st century. Tax shelters or havens must be closed. The wealthiest 400 Americans have more wealth than 150 million people. Time for Plan B, alternative economics and reduced working hours! (text/plain)

text May 21 Deadline to Change Your Party Status to Peace & Freedom or Green to Save Both For Many Parties on Ballot 2012-05-15 6:14 AM
You have until May 21, 2012 to change your party status or register to vote for the 6/5/12 election Peace & Freedom Party or Green Party to save these two parties, due to the anti-democratic “Top Two” Primary Prop 14 passed in June 2010. These 2 parties have been on the ballot only due to receiving enough votes in November elections, but not due to registration. Now, it must be by registration only. The Decline to State voters are 21% of the registered voters, or some 3 million people. If you want choices, you have to care about the parties NOW because Peace & Freedom and Green will most likely not make the Top Two for November and will be gone forever when this happens, as it will, in 2014, the governor’s race and other statewide constitutional offices. text Venice Flea'd Boardwalk sells commercial junk, once again, forever ? Venice artists 2012-05-14 4:32 PM
Venice Boardwalk has a new ordinance that went into effect, was momentarily enforced by the LAPD, and has deteriorated back to what is was for too long = a junky cheap flea market, Since the very same vendors - that were made to not sell non-art which is now illegal, but they have brazenly returned ... to sell their re-sale mdse. to look-like-crafts-or-not- even-pretend-art and get away with what they did before...illegally but loopholed as long as they are not caught in the act of selling the stuff... art be damned...barely exists here. Rules and ordinances can be ignored. Bullying and being sly is what makes Venice work. How Sad, ugly, a loss for Venice. (text/plain)

The Time is Now to Support Carlos Montes, Beloved Chicano Activist
A very important trial is coming up this Tuesday in LA. There will be a large crowd of supporters outside the criminal court building at 8 am demanding justice for Carlos Montes. What justice would mean in this case is that the District Attorney Steve Cooley drops the charges against Carlos Montes, a beloved Chicano activist, before the trial even starts. If the trial does proceed, the jurors will hear many tall tales told to them by the prosecution. What they will see, however, with their own clear eyes is that Carlos Montes' house was raided nearly one year ago at 5am because of FBI political repression due to his years of activism. text Economist criticizes "pathological allegience" to economic models Rudolf Hickel 2012-05-14 7:08 AM

text The Left, Labor and Occupy Internationalist Group 2012-05-14 3:18 AM
Barely half a year after it burst on the scene, the Occupy Wall Street movement is splintering left and right. This was inevitable in a movement that was united only in what it opposed and could never put forward a positive program, whether of reformist "demands" on the capitalist state or of revolutionary action against it. Liberals, who latched onto Occupy hoping it could pressure the Democratic Party in a more populist direction, want to expel "black bloc" anarchists. Reformist social democrats rail against "ultraleftists" in Occupy and cozy up to the labor tops. On the other side, many (but not all) anarchists oppose unions. Some are simply arrogant petty-bourgeois labor haters. Others are grappling with real problems, but with skewed analysis and dead wrong conclusions. Discussion of recent workers' struggles, from Wisconsin to West Coast longshore, underlines that the key question is leadership, but not just replacing one set of bureaucrats with another. Unions have always faced vicious anti-labor laws, but we have the power to defeat them. It is necessary to drive out the pro-capitalist bureaucracy, the labor lieutenants of capital, in order to turn the unions into instruments of revolutionary class struggle. (text/html)
