DESCRIPTION:
download PDF (96.3 kibibytes) As marchers to Montgomery marked the 50th anniversary of the push for passage of the Voting Rights Act, another drama over marriage equality is playing out in Alabama. What's at stake in the resistance by state Chief Justice Roy Moore, arch-enemy of church-state separation, to federal court orders to grant marriage licenses without discrimination? How has state Rep. Patricia Todd, a proud and openly lesbian lawmaker, used her bully pulpit to challenge intolerance in the court of public opinion? And how do displays of bigotry, or personal courage, allow us to build coalitions around church-state separation and civil rights in our own communities?

Hans Johnson leads nonprofit advocacy at the local, state, and national levels. In 2014, after building a diverse base of outspoken leaders throughout California, he won a multi-year campaign to pass the nation's first statewide ban on polluting, single-use plastic bags. For 25 years, he has integrated and meshed community-based and nationally supported campaigns, working closely with foundations, clergy, and interfaith, labor, LGBT, immigrant, civil-rights, reproductive justice, and environmental organizations, and socially responsible business for victories on ballot measures in more than half the states. His commentary appears on Huffington Post and daily op-ed pages around California and throughout the country.
