Gino Strada has provided surgical treatment to thousands of wounded war victims, including victims of land mines, throughout the world.  Seeing first-hand that civilians constitute the overwhelming majority of war casualties, in 1994 Strada founded EMERGENCY: Life Support for Civilian War Victims.  The mission of the Italian-based international aid organization is to provide  high-quality medical, surgical and rehabilitative care free of charge in war-torn areas and to promote a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights.

Howard Zinn,  from a working-class family in Brooklyn, served as an airman in WW II.  His insight into militarism led to life-long radical pacifism.  A historian and political scientist, he has been active since the 1950s in anti-war and civil rights work, and he was a major opponent of the Viet Nam war. Among his many publications is the acclaimed People’s History of the United States; his most recent book is Just War.

Following their appearances in 2005 in Rome and Boston, this will be the first presentation of Strada and Zinn’s symposium on the west coast.

The program is organized by L.A. Friends of EMERGENCY, the southern California chapter of EMERGENCY USA : Life Support for Civilian War Victims and  Physicians for Social Responsibility - Los Angeles
