The newly formed Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant held a press conference in front of the LA court house just before the first Southern California hearing in the murder trial of Johannes Mehserle was set to begin. The LA Coalition, along with several Oakland community activists who traveled south for the hearing, spoke about their determination to end the wanton killing and abuse of people of color by police. Dockworkers honored a community picket line in the Port of Oakland on May 19, 2007, and the shipping operations of a war profiteer were shut down for two shifts. Cargo did not move at the SSA terminal that day. It takes only two lines to sum this up, but it took two months to prepare.

April 7, 2003 was a day we will not soon forget. It was our first protest against the war profiteers who operate out of the Port of Oakland. The police shootings which occurred on that day guaranteed that our commitment would be a long one. This year, on Wednesday, April 7th, we will return to the docks to protest the profiteers and reaffirm our First Amendment rights.
