May Day in Los Angeles, April 30, 2005, was sponsored by MIWON (Multi-Ethnic Workers Organazing Network)

Recognizing May Day as their Labor Day, thousands of American and immigrant workers marched on Saturday and Sunday in the streets of several cities all across the US. In New York, after protests from labor activists and threats of legal suits against the City, Mayor Bloomberg finally issued a permit to march. Here in LA, the large immigrant population made this Southern California event the biggest ot its kind in the Nation. Unlike in the USA, May Day is a major event -- even a national holiday -- in many countries but especially south of the US border in Mexico, Central America, South America, and also in Europe. In other parts of the world, thousands of workers celebrate the world-changing 1886 strike that brought us to the eight hour day and better working conditions.
